What is shadow work?
Shadow work is the practice of exploring the hidden or repressed parts of ourselves — the emotions, memories and traits we’ve been taught to ignore, suppress or feel ashamed of. These “shadow” aspects often include fear, anger, sadness, jealousy or vulnerability — feelings we may have been told were unacceptable, especially during childhood.
Rather than judging these parts of ourselves, shadow work invites us to meet them with compassion. It’s not about fixing or rejecting anything. It’s about acknowledging the full range of our emotions, accepting the parts of yourself you’ve avoided and creating space for healing and wholeness.
Think of it like switching on the light in a room you’ve kept locked for years — not to redecorate it right away but simply to see what’s there and sit with it.
When we lovingly face what we’ve buried, we begin to break free from limiting patterns and reconnect with a deeper, more authentic sense of self.
Techniques for shadow work and emotional healing
Healing your inner child and exploring shadow work doesn’t have to be overwhelming. There are gentle, supportive techniques that can help you reconnect with yourself and start to heal long-held emotional wounds. Here are a few practices you can try:
1. Journaling and letter writing
Write freely about childhood memories, emotional triggers or moments when you felt unseen or unheard. You might also try writing a letter to your inner child. Reassure them, validate their pain and offer the love they may not have received at the time. Let your words flow without judgment.
2. Guided meditation or visualisation
Meditations that guide you to meet and comfort your inner child can be incredibly powerful. Visualise yourself in a safe space, connecting with your younger self and offering them understanding, forgiveness and care. This practice can help release deeply held emotions and foster a sense of emotional safety.
3. Mirror work for self-compassion
Spend a few quiet minutes looking into your own eyes in the mirror. Speak to yourself with kindness, using affirmations or words of encouragement as if you were speaking to a younger version of yourself. This helps cultivate compassion, presence and emotional acceptance.
4. Working with a psychic or spiritual guide
Sometimes, we need a little help to see what’s hidden. A trusted psychic or spiritual guide can help you explore emotional blockages, past-life influences or patterns you may not be consciously aware of. Their intuitive insight can offer a new perspective and support your emotional healing.
